When Jan suggested a walk in Holyrood Park I hadn’t realised she had volunteered there for a year with the ranger service and so had vast amounts of interesting information to share about the social history, natural history and geology of the Park. She also really knows her birds – I learnt about a Bullfinch’s call, the way that Long Tailed Tits support each other, and the sound that a young grey squirrell makes (not technically a bird…). I didn’t know that Holyrood Park is such an important habitat for rare species of butterfly; that the radical road was built by out of work weavers as a way of giving them something to do to reign in their radicalism; that during the Black Death people who contracted the disease were exiled into the park – and many more fascinating facts. We enjoyed watching a tribe of Long Tailed tits.
