I have been to Hidcote Manor Gardens with Mum before but not done this walk, so was delighted when she suggested it. We started by walking through Hidcote Bartrim, a very quaint hamlet full of delightful old cottages in Cotswold stone, before heading across the muddy fields towards Hidcote Boyce and on up the hill. It was a cold grey day and the wind at the top was fierce, but the gorse was still in flower and Chris drew our attention to the seed heads of Old Man’s Beard, a sort of wild clematis which I hadn’t realised was absent from Scotland. Hidcote Bartrim is in the Domesday book (1086) and it is thought that the names refer to former tenants, possibly de Bois and Bertram.
